According to the date I see it was the 12th of September 2009 for The San Diego Union-Tribune to announce this: “The National City-based International Community Foundation is seeking donations to help victims of Hurricane Jimena in Baja California Sur, which left thousands stranded after making landfall on Sept. 2. The foundation is working with the Mexican Red Cross, which has determined that the greatest needs are in the oceanfront communities of Lopez Mateos, Campo Rene, Santa Rosalia and Mulege. Many small inland villages and ranches also are asking for assistance. Donations will help the Red Cross in distributing survival food boxes, water, clothing, tarps and medical supplies. To make a tax-deductible contribution, go to the foundation’s Web site at icfdn.org.”

Disaster Relief Begins in US

The following reports were compiled from emails, ham radio messages, YouTube video, websites, web blogs, and Spanish-speaking TV newscasts.
After flying over Puerto Lopez Mateos, members of the Baja Bush Pilots, a private organization, reported that half the cannery buildings were destroyed, all wood homes were flattened, and a quarter of the population is homeless. Earlier reports said 750 homes were lost in that town, and that the desalination plant at the cannery was destroyed, so the municipality had no water. Earlier reports said the two isolated fishing villages on the barrier island of Isla Magdalena no longer existed.
A Telemundo news team traveling with the Baja California governor reported that the last message from Puerto San Carlos on Magdalena Bay came from a police officer just prior to the hurricane’s landfall, saying the town of San Carlos could not be evacuated because the isthmus roadway had been breached by flood waters.
Following Jimena’s path, Punta Abreojos village and Laguna San Ignacio (whale park) took a direct hit by Jimena’s eye wall as a Category 2 hurricane. Shari Bondi in the Pacific coast fishing village of Bahia Asuncion reported that her village fared well but that Abreojos village and San Ignacio Lagoon were badly damaged.
Up on Baja California’s central mesa, in the large agricultural towns of Ciudad Constitución and Villa Insurgentes, 70% to 90% of the buildings (homes, businesses) were reported as destroyed or not habitable. The mayor’s office in Constitución requested medical supplies, food and water.

The airport at Constitucion has been repaired and opened on Monday, September 7, so emergency supplies are being air lifted there, coordinated by the Baja California Civil Protection agency, the Baja Bush Pilots, and the Flying Samaritans. Emergency supplies will be distributed to outlying villages as roads are repaired.
Puerto Escondido reported no injuries, all the marina moorings held, a few API moorings dragged. A few attended boats chafed through their own mooring lines or dragged anchor but were assisted by the marina staff and fellow yatistas. A few unattended boats did drag ashore, mostly into mangroves. Loreto airport was damaged and closed, but officials said power may be restored to Loreto on Saturday, September 12. The highway south toward Constitución was washed out, many bridges gone, but recent reports say it is passable to La Paz.
Mulege: a 75-year old man drowned when floodwaters filled his home. Mulege residents are reporting worse damage than from Hurricane John in 2006. The highway bridge was 6 feet under raging torrents when the flash flood crested, but that bridge is still standing. All Mulege homes along the river were flooded, about half were destroyed. The fire station had 2 feet of water inside, and throughout the town many roofs are gone and home walls collapsed. All Mulege grocery stores were flooded, and locals are asking for emergency food & water. Mulege shelters are overwhelmed by homeless Jimena victims, so people are sleeping in cars.

All homes on Punta Chivato were flooded and damaged, some destroyed. A pilot living at Punta Chivato reported that one unpaved airstrip has been repaired for emergency landings.
Santa Rosalia’s downtown area was devastated by flash floods (water, mud and debris) that scoured the central canyon, washing cars and drowned livestock out to sea. The older Marina Santa Rosalia was destroyed except for two slips. The Singlar marina reported to be OK, no boats or docks sunk. Yatistas said it rained heavily for 48 hours straight. One person is reported missing from a fishing village north of Santa Rosalia, according to the Baja California Civil Protection agency.

Donation of food, clothing and money are desperately needed to assist the people of Mulegé. Roads are now open but very rough in some places. If you are driving down, see if you can bring some food items- including stuff for babies (Pampers, milk, etc.) and maybe a sack of dog food or cat food. Find more information here…. Another option is the organizer of the Mexican 1000 Rally - NORRA - announcing today the “Rally of Relief” and working with Mexican organizations to distribute donations. Information on this here…

Mulege- north side of the river: Widespread destruction. Don Chano’s was hit hard and little is left. I don’t know if anything is salvageable. If I get a reliable report on that question, I’ll report it. El Patron is gone I’m afraid. It’s a total rebuild if Tim decides to do that. Information is a bit more sketchy about Pancho Villas but I think it’s a good assumption that the report is the same as that for the el Patron.
Mulege- south side: Everything on the south side, from the bridge to and including the Serenidad took a major hit. Damage was worse closer to the bridge. For all practical purposed, the Orchard is wasted. The first row has only three houses left and there are some missing homes in the second row as well. Rows three and four are probably repairable in most cases. I’m checking this morning on rebuilding requirements for the area. Be aware that the city may decide to hold a moratorium on rebuilding as they have done in the past. The length and scope of such moratoriums varies. I’m going to ask the government officials today if they have implemented such a moratorium and, if so, what the restrictions are. The Oasis fared a little better at least in the sense that total destruction was less noticeable. There is a lot of what I would call partial destruction- roofs, rooms, garages, storage buildings, trailers… that sort of thing.

Jungle area, Marybelle’s - reports of “intermittent” damage, mainly to out buildings and/or partial damage to structures. More later after I’ve had a chance to get in there today (hopefully) and check it out more closely.

Posada Concepcion - Took a major hit. I have pictures of widespread damage. I did not see any pictures of what I would consider total destruction but, after review, the decision of the owners in some cases may be not to rebuild.
Burro and Coyote- Reports from Geary Ritchie (Burro) of a lot of damage. Reports are sketchy as he didn’t give me a full report. He just said that they took a big hit. I would expect something like Posada, probably a little less but that is pure speculation on my part… something I do not like to do. I’m just reading between the lines. I’ll try to get more information today.

Hurricane Jimena unleashed flooding that killed at least one man and cut off hundreds of people in remote fishing villages on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula before mellowing into a drifting tropical storm Thursday. The 75-year-old victim drowned when his house flooded in the village of Mulege on the west coast of the peninsula, said Jose Gajon de la Toba, director of Civil Protection in Baja California Sur state. He said one other person was missing in the fishing village of San Buto.
Emergency workers evacuated thousands of people from shacks and low-lying areas before Jimena made landfall Wednesday, but some refused to leave their homes for fear their possessions would be stolen. Flooding stranded several villages along the eastern coast of the peninsula, said Joel Villegas, mayor of the Comondu municipality that encompasses the villages.
He said some people were in need of medical help, including a woman who had a miscarriage and another person with a broken arm. Villegas said he would ask the federal government for helicopters to rescue the injured. About 4,000 people in Comondu lost their homes in the storm, Villegas said. The federal government promised to help residents rebuild but urged patience. Read more here…

Tropical storm Jimena, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, is weakening but causing extensive flooding in the Mulege and Santa Rosalia areas on the eastern coast of Baja California. Nearby Loreto reportedly is without electricity because of a damaged power station.
Jimena made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane near San Carlos in the Magdalena Bay area, then swept across the peninsula to Santa Rosalia and Mulege, whose riverbanks have swelled. The popular surf destination San Juanico (Scorpion Bay) on the Pacific coast also has received extensive damage.
Cabo San Lucas, East Cape and La Paz escaped with no major damage. In fact, sport-fishing boats and even a few dive boats from these areas embarked Thursday for the first time since the storm began to make its presence felt last weekend.
Reports from Mulege, however, indicate extensive flooding. A new hospital’s floors are under water. A bridge leading into Mulege is damaged. And at least one person, an elderly man, has died.
Farther south, in the wake of Jimena, damage is still being assessed. In the Pacific port city of San Carlos, five commercial fishing boats were damaged or sunk. One of the vessels that sunk was the Ensenada, with 300 tons of tuna and other fish in its hold.

Jimena forces evacuations

Extremely dangerous and strengthening Hurricane Jimena roared toward Mexico’s resort-studded Baja California Peninsula on Monday, prompting emergency workers to set up makeshift shelters and chasing away an international finance conference. Jimena, just short of Category 5 status, could rake the harsh desert region fringed with picturesque beaches and fishing villages by Tuesday evening, forecasters said. At least 10,000 families will be evacuated from potential flood zones, said Francisco Cota, the local director of Civil Protection. He said 60 shelters would be set up. “I think it’s going to be a substantial hurricane by the time it approaches,” said Richard Pasch of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. A spokesman for the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information said it decided Monday to move the conference — including more than 170 representatives from 54 countries — to Mexico City, even though some delegates had already arrived in Los Cabos. “The meeting has been planned for two months and the meteorological conditions, by their very nature, are unpredictable,” said conference spokesman Anthony Gooch.

Los Cabos Mayor Oscar Nunez said people in poorly constructed homes face “a huge potential risk” right now and they may be forced to evacuate.As rain started falling Monday morning, Mitch Williams of Orange County, Calif., waited at the airport to fly home from his vacation. “I know that it’s getting closer. … The hurricane can do a lot of damage if it hits at that strength,” he said.
Williams said poorer residents who live in shacks in this vacation town are not well prepared. “It will wipe them out,” he said. His advice for tourists was simple: “Get out.”
But on Cabo’s famous beaches, some tourists were doing just the opposite, getting into the Pacific to play in the hurricane’s big waves. Although city officials shut down the port, lifeguard Roman Dominguez with the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department said there’s no feasible way to close a beach. “We struggle a lot with surfers,” he said. “They’re looking for waves.”
Lifeguards perched in a tower looked on Monday as two women, one with her boogie board, another on a surf board, paddled into pounding surf under cloudy skies.
